Initial Bench Treatability Test – PPI Chromate Waste Process Water

The initial waste plating process water was collected by Chromate Plating Shop in two (2) 1 gallon jugs.  These samples were picked up by Keeco personnel.  Ken Gardner of N.E.A.T. Environment, Inc. collected the samples at the Keeco Shop in Lynnwood, Washington and transported them to Kelowna, B.C. where the bench test was completed.

The KB-1 treatment was completed by Ken Gardner and personnel at International Metallurgical and Environmental, Inc. (IME). The metallurgical lab completed lab analysis on the raw wastewater and KB-1 Treated samples of the waste process plating water.  This KB-1 treatment work was done on Wednesday, 3 April; with the lab analysis being completed the following 2 days on the KB-1 treated waste water.

One of the sample jugs were opened and a 100 ml sample was taken by IME Lab Technician to provide the “Raw Water” metals analysis and pH reading.  This raw water analysis was done in order to provide treatment guidelines on how to treat with the Keeco SME product using KB-1.

Once the raw water analysis was done, a 2 liter sample from the same 1 gallon jug and was placed in a large beaker. The following observations were made :

1.                  Water was dark blue in colour but with not suspended solids.

2.                  Water was allowed to settle for 1 hour.  There were no solids in the bottom of the beaker.

9:50     pH adjustment was done with 1.1 grams Caustic,                                  pH 4.02           293

as the caustic was added, the sample was hand stirred, with

pH monitored continuously.

As pH 4.02 was obtained, the water turned an Olive green

            With a light flock produced.

10:00   pH remained at pH 4.00, so with the water stabilized, then

the sample was ready to start the SME Treatment using KB-1.  pH 4.00           248

                        Treatment Description                                                          pH                   ORP

10:05   Starting with 25 ml of tap water, 1.5 grams of KB-1

was mixed into a slurry.  Then slowly added to the

2 – L. PPI water sample, with continuous hand stirred agitation. pH 4.30           245

10:30   Sample had been allowed to settle.  At this time the sample

is agitated and reading were taken.                                                        pH 4.34           246

10:40   Starting with 25 ml of tap water, 1.5 grams of KB-1

was mixed into a slurry.  Then slowly added to the

2 – L. PPI water sample, with continuous hand stirred agitation. pH 7.65           160

10:45   At this time the sample is agitated and reading were taken.                     pH 10.20         153

A light brown flock has formed and settled quickly to the

Bottom of beaker.  With the flock settled, the water is clear.

Clear water decant sample taken – 1 hr. 45 mins. Into KB-1 treatment for lab analysis

This sample was taken just 1hour and 45 mines from the start of the KB-1 treatment.  Normally a sample is allowed to react with the metals and the KB-1 for 4 to 6 hours.  We wanted to see if the fast incline of the pH from pH 4.35 to pH 10.20 had failed to properly react with the various pH precipitation levels for the metals that were in the raw water sample.  From the lab analysis shown below in figure 3, there has been a reduction of the metals, although Cr is above discharge standards.

Water was allowed to settle for approximately 1 hour.  At that time, additional reading for pH and ORP were completed.

The following picture will provide the visible evidence of how the water had reacted to the SME KB-1 treatment.  Changing water colour and pH with just 1.5 grams / liter of raw water treated.

At this time the KB-1 treated sample was poured into a vacuum filter with a shark skin filter to filter out the precipitation material from the treated water.  The filter and the KB-1 treated sludge were placed into a drying oven overnight. On the following page, the lab analysis sheet of the KB-1 Treated water is shown.

Figure 5.  PPI Waste Chromate Plating Water –

Lab Analysis after 1hr. 45 mins. Reaction time with KB-1 and 5 hours reaction with KB-1.

Lab analysis of KB-1 Treated Sludge.

From the above results, we believe that the treatment process can be developed to insure encapsulation of the metals present in the PPI raw chromate waste plating water to discharge standards with a safety margin.  From the initial lab tests and KB-1 treatment of 1.5 grams per Liter, it can be assumed that this treatment would be economical.

It is suggested that an additional two bench treatability lab tests and KB-1 treatment processes be completed on two samples, each of different PPI Chromate waste plating water.  From these additional lab bench tests, Keeco can verify the treatment procedures, amount of KB-1 required and compliance with the PPI KB-1 treated water.
