Silica Micro
Encapsulation (SME)
The ”Best Available Technology” to
treat heavy metal contaminated water, soil, sediment and sludge.
Silica Micro Encapsulation of Precipitated Copper
Species ( 100x )
SME Process Description
SME usually achieves
control of contaminants in a single step, without the need for pretreatment
with chemicals or post-treatment flocculation or filtration. Its
physical/chemical components include an initial exothermic reaction and pH
adjustment followed by an electrokinetic reaction and metal hydroxyl formation,
which leads to silica encapsulation. Contrary to conventional treatment processes
that typically degrade over time, the SME silica matrix continues to strengthen
and tighten, further isolating contaminants from the environment.
The entire reactivity and stabilization process occurs in minutes and generates harmless sand-like sediments, which rapidly settle out of the water. The concentrations of heavy metals in the treated waters are reduced to well below acceptable state, federal and provincial pollution criteria, often below detectable limits. In some treatment programs, particularly in the mining industry, it is also possible to provide resource recovery of certain metal concentrations present in the water.
